Everyone was very welcoming of me when I arrived onsite. The safety and training department was very thorough with their induction and answered every question I had.

Tell me where you have completed vacation work with Byrnecut?

I completed two vacation work stints at Capricorn Copper.  The first stint was at the end of 2021 and the start of 2022 where I spent seven months driving trucks.  I then came back over Christmas 2022 where I worked for Byrnecut however, I was seconded in the client’s technical services department.

How did you find the recruitment process?

I was interviewed for the vacation position and was offered the job.  However, my mum was very apprehensive about me working in the mining industry.  So Byrnecut offered to personally meet with my mum to answer all of her questions, which put her at ease about me working underground.

What was your first experience when you arrived onsite?

Everyone was very welcoming of me when I arrived onsite.  The safety and training department were very thorough with their induction and answered every question I had.  I was also invited to some Women in Mining events which really made me feel part of the team.

What was your first reaction to going underground?

Before I went underground I was genuinely scared.  However, when you realise the size of the machinery and the development drives, you understand that you are not stooped over in a small tunnel.  Combine that with the training that we received (such as cap lamp signals and emergency procedures), as well as shift supervisors that take the time to point out hazards to you, you quickly get comfortable working underground.

What was your favourite part of your vacation work?

Although I loved my time working underground driving trucks, I loved the technical services experience.  It gave me a better understanding of why decisions are made, how priorities re set, and giving me a long term understanding or mining.  I also learned how to use the design software Deswick, which is invaluable experience.

Do you have any advice for future Byrnecut vacation students?

Firstly, working underground is not as daunting as you imagine.  And secondly, don’t be afraid to ask questions, get your hands dirty and work hard, and you will get a lot out of the Byrnecut vacation program.
