How does the mentorship and buddy work at BHP?

Joseph Rivera

HSE Graduate

You'll be partnered up with a second-year buddy who's already done a year with the business. That person who has volunteered their time, care and commitment to you and your development (for both the intern and grad programs) will communicate with yourself to decide on what routines work for you. That is in addition to the graduate committee, other graduates, people on site, and definitely our line leaders. At no point should you ever feel afraid to reach out to your line leader. Your buddies and the graduates themselves should never replace the line leader and they should always be your first point of contact. For anything informal, you reach out to your buddy and I find that the buddy program is a really good way to reach out to other areas of the business, such as other mine sites and departments. We've also got EAP services 24/7 for yourself, your friends and your family. So you've got your graduate coordinators, disciplined champions, etc... We very much do care about your mental health and long-term sustainability here at BHP.

Mentorship is in itself another aspect and that's actually finding someone formal in the business to really mentor you through your professional life. That's up to you to reach out to a mentor as a person who seeks mentorship. It's all based on your drive.
