Pros & Cons

  • The community and culture is strong, people at all levels are welcoming, open and willing to help by sharing their experience or providing advice and feedback to help grow within the business and industry.
  • Probably the type of experience I'm getting. I never really understood how different this industry is and how intricate the work can be. Usually if there's work, I find myself learning something new every day. I'm very interested in this area of work and I'm able to do a mix of hands on and desk-oriented work.
  • The company cares about our wellbeing as opposed to seeing us as resources. Evidence of this is flexible working arrangements, PPD allowance, providing snacks and coffee at the office, offering mentoring and manager catch ups, and the fact that they really listen to our needs and wants, especially in the Graduate Program.
  • The community and project teams are amazing. They are full of life and very passionate about the project they are in. They never hesitate to lend a helping hand and are constantly there to support your learning.
  • The company culture and graduate culture are big positives. Everyone is welcoming and inclusive, and I have formed strong friendships with other grads. The ability to work from home or via the office and self-govern your time is also a positive aspect.
  • Additional admin when working for a client.
  • The breadth of work, while a positive, does mean that keeping track of everything going on at Nova isn't always easy. Thankfully the friendliness of Novans means asking questions is never a problem.
  • Spending a lot of time on the bench. It took many months to get work, but once I did get work it was very enjoyable. That extended time on the bench is not great, though, especially when you are expected to find work yourself and show up at the office.
  • The waiting (standard across consulting gigs)
  • There are times when there isn't enough work to keep yourself busy and consultants and grads are sidelined with internal or development tasks until there is engaging work to do. The restrictions on using your PD can also sometimes be a challenge. The salary progression model could also be better.

I feel that Nova values personal development and encourages people to seek career progression within the company.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Just like company diversity, there is a similar push for charitable drives, environmental initiatives and community-based issues. The most recent being a fundraiser for homeless support and supplying safe and warm supplies.

Culture
9.1
Culture
Excellent culture, everyone is easy going and willing to help where able to. The more experienced people are always willing to sit and explain a process or concept to allow those with less experience to develop understanding. All the Managers have an open door policy, always willing to listen and help with any situation you are in, the first company I have been at where this is the case. Outside of work the younger members of the office are tight knit with weekly trivia and group chats to check in on each other and make sure everything is going well. The attendance at work events is usually very high and everyone enjoys each other's company, having a good time at organised events.

Diversity

Diversity
Without revealing too much, it's just nice to see an engineering office that's not just occupied by one representation. I know Nova goes out of its way to encourage all areas of diversity and it should be a standard, but I would also like to see commitment cast in the direction of earlier encouragement during high school.

I am responsible for a number of different tasks and I am given relative freedom to manage them the best way I see fit.

From my experience, my managers have been fantastic. They've supported me and assisted with formulating my career goals and helping me achieve them. Communicating with them is very easy and they are very upfront with feedback and recognition.

Office Work Environment
The spaces and facilities available are excellent. Offices are well appointed with everyone one could need to work, including spare food and snacks. The office dress code is very fair because it allows staff to dress to a level of formality that reflects their day. I feel more comfortable in slightly more casual clothing when working internally so the extra freedom is appreciated.

Recruitment

Recruitment
The hiring process was very standard. Stage one was a CV and cover letter. This was followed by a phone interview, then a face-to-face video interview. Final stage was a background/police check, then offers. I can't remember specific questions but I remember getting asked a good range of topics. It covered my past experience and who I am as a person. It also allowed me to discuss many elements of my life: personal, university, and internship. I remember time going so fast as I relaxed into the conversation. I'd recommend following the companys projects via website or social media - to expose yourself to what we do. As a consulting company, customer relations and stakeholder engagement is really important so make sure to get experience in that area. The company is looking for applicants who are skilled, but willing to learn and are a good culture fit, so dont be afraid to show your personality.

Salary
I know this is a graduate role and the pay is there to match, I wouldn't have applied if I felt like the opportunity didn't compensate for the grad pay rate. I do recognise that the system they have placed does reflect well for just-out-of-university young grads. PD perk is amazing, discounts through the engage program and graduate dinners are really fun way to bond. One of the best perks is the annual Conference where we all come together in one city for a few days.

Training

Training
Early there is a lot of training: work specific courses (test & evaluation, consulting, systems engineering, requirements writing, system safety, Defence logistics), professional speaking course, professional writing course. Later we have done: self-awareness, self-branding (how to do LinkedIn), consulting course.

Work Hours
One thing that this company does best is how flexible work hours are. Managers are understanding and always remember that everyone has a life outside of work. Flexibility is one of the strongest points and hence why I love working here.
