Pros & Cons

  • Supportive and friendly environment that pushes me to learn and grow. I have been given lots of opportunities in my role as a graduate. Hybrid/flexible working is also wonderful.
  • The people and culture are extremely welcoming and kind, not just to graduates but throughout the organisation.
  • Really enjoy working with the best technology, the culture and the ability to be myself and learn new things everyday and really enjoy the ability work flexible.
  • The culture and people provide support for personal and professional development. Flexible working arrangements and flexible hours.
  • The culture, the support from teams and everyone at the company especially for graduates and newcomers. The infinite learning and development opportunities with real value conversations about personal development with team leaders.
  • Because it is so large, coordination of work can be difficult, meaning tasks are being done by multiple teams at once.
  • It is very big.
  • Having to manage different time zones via hybrid working which also means we can't always see our team mates face to face, losing that in person benefit.
  • There is confusion about the structure of teams, groups, and functions.
  • Often difficult to get things done. Such a large company means many people involved in decision making.

Career Prospects
There are a heap of cross-skilling opportunities, and Telstra looks to promote people with multiple experiences under their belt. Moving up the ranks requires you to know who to know a little bit but also to have a diverse skillset. Often, people with a wide variety of experiences will go up the chain faster than those with a deep knowledge of one topic, even if the job relates to that topic. Luckily, Telstra's remuneration system accounts for this and allows technical experts to be paid accordingly.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Too many to count. There's a whole bunch of CSR stuff happening, I couldn't even be across it all. But this company is genuinely doing good and strives to do the right thing. Digital literacy workshops, mentoring high school/university students, providing grants to so many different things, blood donors, community events, supporting Indigenous communities, supporting mental health orgs are just a few examples.

Culture
The company culture is really laid-back and great to be a part of. The structure is set so everyone knows who to go to for what, who their management is, and who is responsible for which specific aspects. The socialisation aspect is also cool, whether is coffee Catchups, virtual or in person, after hours happy hour drinks or just finding time to get into the office at our own choice with our colleagues, it creates a really good culture and environment to be a part of,

Diversity
Massive focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We have active employee representative groups for women, LGBT+, culturally and linguistic diverse, First Nations, etc., as well as a team dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is something that leaders seem to champion. Offer flexibiltiy for parents- many parents can work from home, pick up their kids from school, etc. Paid parental leave There is lots of learning about how to make things more accessible. Plan for reconciliation and lots of effort behind empowering our First Nations communities. I always considered myself aware of DEI issues, but since joining this company, I have actually learned so much more than I thought I ever could've, especially about working with disabilities, working with neurotypical employees, and working with Indigenous Australians. Plus, great programs empower women in tech. There are lots of female leaders.

The work I do is engaging and is helping me develop my technical skills. My day-to-day involves short-term and long-term planning as well as ad-hoc requests. The mix between ad-hoc and forecast work is refreshing; I'm able to work towards long-term project goals, but some days are spiced up by something new.

My managers are really accessible; they always respond in a timely manner. They look out for my needs and provide me with lots of information. They are good mentors as well. We have an appreciation platform where we can recognise others for their great work and contributions.

Office Work Environment
Office in all major Australian cities plus additional work spaces dotted around the country. The Sydney office is in the middle of George St and has some pretty incredible views. The floor I work on is collaborative, stimulating and spacious. Lockers are available, coffee machines, balcony, hot/cold water taps, kitchen, televisions, ping pong tables, standing tables, couches, etc. Great space to work. People come into the office dressed both in hoodies and suits- you can wear what you feel comfortable in, as long as its workplace appropriate.

Recruitment
The entire application process was outlined in the job advertisement, and although there were several assessments involved in the application process, there was a sufficient amount of communication that kept me well-informed about the progress of my application. The interviewers were friendly and posed insightful questions, and the assessments appeared to be fair and reasonable.

I had a 3-day induction, where I was told all about the company, the structure, the rewards and benefits, etc. They also have a wealth of online training to complete such as future ready courses and masterclasses, LinkedIn learning access, workday training. We have people development days once a month which is dedicated to development in your specific area/role. We have opportunities to participate in workshops or programs to further develop and practice our skills.

100% flexible. Work from where you want, when you and for as long as you want. You're assessed on the work you produce, not the hours you spent at work. This is fantastic, it means I can do family things throughout the day if I have to.
